Mars was the roman God of War, the counterpart of the greek god Ares. The first thing I’d like to point out is that this archetype may be simple to understand, but it is also\u00a0very difficult to accept in us. This because our society\u00a0holds in high regard\u00a0the mind\u2014logic and reason\u2014but it strongly condemns the body as well as its intense instincts.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is deeply rooted in the western culture. As we can read in<\/span>\u00a0the Iliad<\/span>\u00a0Ares’ father Zeus<\/a>\u2014God of\u00a0Law and Order\u2014tells him: “you are the most hateful to me of the gods who hold the Olympus, for strife is always dear to you, and wars and battles” (cit. Iliad 5.890\u2013891<\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Mars as a Force<\/h2>\n

Mars is the power of self-affirmation. It is the bearer of\u00a0our\u00a0will,\u00a0firmly\u00a0<\/span>determined to<\/span>\u00a0accomplish tasks and get results.\u00a0<\/span>He’s not<\/span>\u00a0willing to discuss too much or compromise\u2014h<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>aims straight to the goal<\/span>. This\u00a0<\/span>uncooperative <\/span>attitude makes him aggressive easily,\u00a0<\/span>fueling its reputation of god of war. He indeed loves to fight,\u00a0compete and\u2014above all\u2014to win, especially\u00a0<\/span>in discussions in which\u00a0<\/span>he always wants to be right<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He challenges himself all the time to test and prove its worth and <\/span>go beyond his limits<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>As you can imagine\u00a0he’s very competitive and\u00a0ambitious,\u00a0seeking<\/span>\u00a0everlasting glory as the\u00a0heroes of the past<\/span>. His burning desire makes him a passionate and fiery lover w<\/span>illing to do anything to win the beloved<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the men’s planet Mars also represents muscles,\u00a0strength\u00a0and\u00a0virility\u2014both moral and physical.\u00a0He\u00a0gives us a sense of integrity and honor, teaching boys how to become men\u00a0of their word. He has a strong sense for the truth, and he doesn’t like\u00a0to play\u00a0games with people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Warrior<\/h2>\n

According to the myth, Ares’ tutor Priapus\u2014a minor fertility god\u2014taught him dancing first, and the art of war only afterwards. This allows us to understand that even though a warrior may be driven on the battlefield by his instincts, those has been educated by rhythm and music first. Dancing is feeling, being in touch with our body, emotions and sensuality.\u00a0That’s\u00a0a crucial martial experience we need\u00a0to learn in order to make good love.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mars (Ares especially)\u00a0was depicted as violent and brutal\u00a0(he brought war, after all). But a<\/span>\u00a0real Warrior is first of all a dancer and a lover, not a murderer.\u00a0His reflexes are quick, snappy his muscles;<\/span> he has poise and elegance, and he’s able to\u00a0stand up confident\u00a0to defend what he believes in<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He can\u00a0make a difference because he’s disciplined. He’s aware that the real\u00a0enemy lies within: he fights\u00a0self-pity,\u00a0<\/span>irresponsibility, powerlessness,\u00a0indifference and fear.<\/span>\u00a0He’s brave not because he has no\u00a0fear, but because he can accept it and pass it through.<\/p>\n
