The Saturn Uranus Square 2021 — Third Stage of a 44-year cycle

Reading Time : 7 minutes

Time is marked by great Universal Rythms. Some of them are quick, lasting for not even a month. Others are very slow, working on the world through waves of the lowest frequency. The Saturn Uranus Cycle falls definitely somewhere in between, linking together two living Archetypes that are opposite to each other.

In the previous article we discussed about the forces at play, in order to get a general understanding of the square aspect they are currently making. Freedom and control, destruction and construction, progressives and conservatives, revolution and the status quo.

If you are interested in learning more about the Saturn Uranus Square per se, please check that out. In this article we are going to be focusing on the current cycle they are undertaking, which is a 44-year process.

So, when did this cycle started? What have been its most important stages so far? Looking at the way the Archetypes have been interacting in the past is crucial. In fact understanding the whole cycle is going to allow us to give to the 2021 square a much broader sense. What is the general significance of the clash between Saturn and Uranus that will last for the next two years?

The Saturn Uranus Cycle

First of all, I would like to emphasize the fact that I am not a historian, much less an economist. However if we want to understand the last Saturn Uranus Cycle we will necessarily have to make both historical and economic considerations. So please take this into account and look at these considerations as an humble attempt to better understand what’s going to happen in the next two years, learning from the cycles of the past.

Current Saturn-Uranus Cycle

In the picture above you can get a clear view of each of the stages of the cycle. Generally speaking, in a counter-clockwise direction and according to the colors we have:

  • The Conjunction: the beginning of the cycle. The two Archetypes merge together, and a new impulse is given.
  • The First Sextile: the cycle that have just begun acquires momentum and it gets more visible and clear, especially its direction or goal. The Archetypes resonate in harmony here.
  • The First Square: the cycle confronts the first moment of crisis, caused by its immaturity. The initial instinctive push is no longer enough. Precautions must be taken to proceed. The Archetypes fight each other, bringing out their differences.
  • The First Trine: after having overcome the crisis and adjusted the course, a new impetus emerges. The stability here is greater if the previous crisis has been overcome. The Archetypes collaborate.
  • The Opposition: we are halfway the cycle, a moment which represents awareness. We observe what we have done so far, and we ask ourselves if the direction taken is really the one we want to go in. The Archetypes take stock of the situation, confronting each other.
  • The Second Trine: we positively proceed our journey treasuring the experience we made so far. We act not only trying to avoid our old mistakes, but also according to our maturity and experience. The Archetypes collaborate again.
  • The Second Square: the cycle itself starts to creak. Systemic errors that cannot be solved shows up. Major changes need to be made. The cycle begins to age and needs to evolve. The Archetypes face their incompatibilities.
  • The Second Sextile: the critical issues have been temporarily fixed, but radical change is needed. The Archetypes prepare the seed of a new cycle, finding together a solution to the previous point.

As you can see Saturn and Uranus are now making their Second Square (2021). Let’s try now to understand how this applies to the current situation by looking at the main stages of the cycle we’ve already been through.

The Saturn Uranus Cycle Main Stages

Sometimes planetary cycles are difficult to grasp. This because they are intertwined with each other and can’t be isolated and recognized in their pure form.

However, if we consider the Saturn Uranus Cycle as the historical unfolding of the relationship between the Archetype of Fear and Control (representing the Powerful), and the Archetype of Progress and Revolution (representing the People), we can clearly see a pattern here.

During the previous Saturn Uranus cycle, from 1942 to 1988, we saw the world splitting into the two great post-war ideologies: Capitalism versus Socialism. Back then, the Saturn Uranus Cycle was mainly an expression of the class struggle. As we go through this cycle we can see things gradually changing, finding in 1988 a new beginning.

During the Saturn-Uranus conjunction in 1988 we assist at the revolutionary wave that will eventually lead to the Collapse of the Soviet Union. Looking at the bigger picture, it was the arrival of Neptune in 1989 on the Saturn Uranus conjunction that determined that outcome. As we mentioned, cycles are intertwined. Being Neptune an energy of dissolution, the major event which represented this conjunction was the fall of the Berlin Wall. A wall being clearly a Saturnian symbol.

The Uranian Archetype:
from Proletarian to Terrorist

The previous cycle wanted Saturn and Uranus expressing their conflictive tension mainly around the concept of class struggle. But what about it now? What’s the expression of this conflict? In order to answer to this question, we can move on to the second stage of the current cycle: the Saturn Uranus first square of 1999-2000.

Again this transit is very difficult to pin down because it happened immediately before the Saturn Pluto opposition, which brought to the whole 9/11 situation. As you may notice, the opposition had in 2001 a very similar flavor of the Saturn Pluto conjunction of 2020.

Now, it would be tempting to relate the Saturn Uranus first square to the creation of the euro currency in 1999 and to the burst of the Dot.com (or Technology) bubble in 2000. Especially because it certainly had a part in that. But financial power is mainly a plutonic signification, not Saturnian. Saturn has to do with governments and political power. So what happened in those years?

In order to answer to this question we need to look at Uranus as the enemy of Saturn. And since Saturn represents the governments, we need to ask: how did the perception of the enemy change during the years?

After 9/11 we assisted to a radical transformation in the perception of Uranus, regarded as the enemy of the Saturnian governments. Before 1989 the enemy of Capitalism was a socialist ideology based on the ideal that “we are all equal” (Uranus).

In the last decades the figure of Uranus gradually transformed from being the socialist proletarian to the subversive terrorist. Terrorism was not something new. But during this cycle we could clearly see how the narrative of the enemy shifted from socialism to terrorism. This of course from a western perspective.

The Technologization of the Citizen
and the Paralysis of the Forces of Revolution

All forms of established power fear Uranus. This because it’s the bringer of revolution and radical change. And the powerful never want to really change the status quo, simply because in the actual system they rule and prosper.

The forces of Uranus have now been turned away, projected on a figure that’s impossible to identify with. Who wants to be a terrorist? People are generally afraid of them. They are the incarnation of the revolutionary figure you don’t want to become. Or at least this is true in countries ruled by a capitalistic system.

In my opinion the failure of socialism, and the consequent unleashing of neoliberalism, brought the general population to be absorbed in a system that is now perceived as something that cannot be changed. And since we feel that it can’t be changed, we stop trying.

But where did the Uranian impulse go? Since it cannot be removed, it’s been completely pushed on its technological aspect. Technology, one of the most important Uranian significations, absorbed in western countries all the energies of revolution and change.

The more the citizens become technologized, the less they are capable of directing the same energies elsewhere. With technology we became more and more capable, and in a certain sense powerful, but this continuing technological revolution paralyzed our forces. To the point that now we can’t use them for real political and social change.

The 2008 Economic Crisis
as an Opportunity for Awareness

As we said, in the cycle the opposition represents a moment of awareness. From 2008 to 2010 we had the Saturn Uranus Opposition, which manifested in a global economic crisis. Again, we don’t want to look at the financial aspect per se. Strictly speaking, that’s part of the Uranus Pluto Square (2012-2015) which took the shape of the Occupy Movement and the Arab Spring.

With this cycle we are more concerned in the relationship between the governments and the people. In fact during the crisis the rich have become richer and the poor poorer. This should not surprise us since this situation is repeated cyclically through history.

But here the opposition turned out to be very much to the detriment of the population. To the point that we can say that this is the result of the actual direction taken by the current cycle. A cycle where the Uranian significations (social justice, equality, and so on) have been literally enchanted in technology.

The Saturn Uranus Square 2021
and the role of Pluto in the cycle

During the Saturn Uranus second Square of 2021-2022 systemic errors that cannot be solved are going to show up. As we can see there is a pattern repeating itself, concerning the general financial situation. It seems that in this cycle economic crisis are functioning as a trigger for the tension between Saturn and Uranus to rise.

In fact during both the squares and the opposition we can always see the intervention of Pluto on Saturn. As we mentioned, financial powers belong to Pluto. Here’s the points of contact between the Saturn Uranus cycle and the Saturn Pluto cycle:

  • In 2001, right after the first Square, we had the Saturn Pluto Opposition;
  • From 2008 to 2010, during the Opposition, we had the Saturn Pluto second Square in 2009;
  • In 2020, just before the 2021 second Square, with the Saturn Pluto Conjunction.

Of course this time the economic crisis is the result of the pandemic. And the consequences are going to be again that the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer. It’s already happening. In this regard, we can identify Pluto with the interests of an uncontrolled form of neoliberalism.

So what can we expect from 2021-2022? My opinion is that the current economic crisis is going to highlight all the paradoxes of a capitalistic system without social counterweights. As a matter of facts, many governments had to financially help citizens during the pandemic, effectively putting in place socialist countermeasures. The result is a huge debt though.

Do we want to live in a system based on debt? Are there alternative solutions to this system? Will Uranus wake up from the technological spell? And if he does, what is a new possible revolutionary ideal to include in the next cycle? Its seed (second sextile) is going to be prepared during 2025-26 that according to André Barbault are the years of the great recovery.
